It's been getting pretty chilly here in the mornings now that summer is coming to an end. So I've been craving some hot cocoa.

Although I love my coffee, there are times when I like to warm up with a sweet cup of keto hot chocolate on cold winter days. I've tried a lot of low-carb recipes made with cocoa, chocolate, or a combination of both.

Nothing was ever perfect for me until I changed a basic recipe from a bag of Ghirardelli unsweetened cocoa by adding chocolate extract. That simple addition gives the drink a much richer chocolate taste.

How to Make Keto Hot Chocolate

It's really easy to make your own hot cocoa. I like to make it on the stove top using cocoa, heavy cream, and a low-carb sweetener.

Although I used Pyure All-Purposein the recipe, you can use any keto-friendly sweetener you have on hand. Since my local Walmart carries Pyure, the price is very reasonable and I can pick it up any time.

To start, I mix the cream and water in a small pot on the stove. For dairy-free, I just use unsweetened almond milk instead. Then I dump in the cocoa and sweetener.

The cocoa and sweetener are whisked in until well combined into the liquid. Then the mixture is heated until steaming while continuing to stir frequently with the whisk.

The final step in the keto hot chocolate recipe is to add in chocolate extract after removing from the heat. However, you can use vanilla extract or even peppermint extract instead.

Homemade Sugar Free Hot Chocolate

Once you start making your own low carb hot chocolate, you may never want to go back to those powdered mixes again.

But, if you do like the convenience of a mix, I have a homemade dairy free hot chocolate mix that I like to keep at work.

Carbs in a Serving

The recipe makes two servings. I generally drink one right away and save the other serving for later. I'll just put it in a covered jar in the refrigerator and heat it up in the microwave.

Cocoa does contain a fair amount of carbs so each serving has 7 grams carbs with 2 grams of fiber. Therefore, the net carb count is about 5 grams per servings.

Serving Low-Carb Hot Chocolate

I recommend adding keto marshmallows and or sugar-free whipped cream on top before serving. You can also sprinkle on some grated keto chocolate or use hot chocolate stirrers to add more flavor.

I use a cream whipper to make my own low-carb whipped cream with heavy cream, sweetener, and vanilla extract. It's so easy! Just add the ingredients and use a N2O charger to whip it up right in the canister.

Don't bother with those cans of whipped cream they sell at the store. They are full of additives like sugar, corn syrup, and maltodextrin which aren't keto friendly.

The warm drink is great paired with my Atkins shake recipe for chocolate muffins.

Ingredients

  • 3 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa I used Ghirardelli
  • 1 ½ tablespoons Pyure All Purpose
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 1 cup water
  • ¼ teaspoon chocolate extract see notes
  • sugar free whipped cream optional

US Customary - Metric

Instructions

  • Mix cocoa and sweetener in small bowl, set aside.

  • Pour water and heavy cream into small sauce pan.

  • Add cocoa mixture and stir. Heat, while stirring and steaming.

  • Remove from heat and stir in chocolate extract.

  • Top with sugar free whipped cream if desired.

Notes

If you don't have chocolate extract, vanilla extract is a good substitute. Or change it up with a little peppermint extract.

Pyure All Purpose is twice as sweet as sugar so if using a one-for-one sugar substitute like Swerve, you'll want to use twice as much.

For dairy-free, use almond milk or coconut milk in place of the water and heavy cream.
