Is chilli jam the same as sweet chilli sauce? ›

The second chilli jam vs chilli sauce difference is sweetness. Unless you've got a super sweet hot sauce, a chilli jam will typically be a lot sweeter. This sweetness is what makes a jam so versatile, it works on pizza, fried chicken, with cheese or almost anything else (our top 6 uses of jam are here).

The best sweet chilli sauce substitutes are a combination of maple syrup, red pepper flakes or chili powder, and white vinegar or other spicy condiments like sriracha, sambal oelek, chili garlic sauce or spicy ketchup.

But if you have diabetes or want to reduce your added sugar intake, sweet chilli sauce is worth flagging. Or, if you are reducing foods like potato and pasta but adding sugar-laden sauces, perhaps consider the overall carbohydrate content of the meal and how sustaining it is, not whether or not you've ditched the spud.
