Laurence "Larry" Thomas Casey Obituary - 2022 (2024)

Larry Casey (Age 72) of Silver Spring, Maryland passed away suddenly on December 7, 2022. He was predeceased by his adoptive parents John A. and Isabel (Pleachus) Casey.

He is survived by his beloved wife Rosemary; his daughter Shelly (Smith) and sons Larry, Jr. (wife, Ellen), Jonathan (wife, Monica) and Timothy (wife, Carla); and grandchildren Hunter and Madison (Smith). He is also survived by his brother Mark (wife, Miyian).

Larry was born in Germany on January 7, 1950. He was raised in the Washington, DC area and graduated from Church Farm School in Chester Co., Pennsylvania. Larry started his career as an auto mechanic at Sears, and later served as the chief mechanic and manager at an Amoco gas station in Gaithersburg, Maryland. He then pursued a career in the electrical industry, where he built a well-respected and fulfilling life long career. He initially started working for a small electrical contractor, but had a much bigger vision and pursued his Master Electrical License. His dedication and mastery enabled him to start his own business, and he founded his own company with his oldest son. In 2002, he merged his company with Palmer Brothers, where he established the electrical division. There, he was relied upon for his expertise across many areas of the company, and was frequently referred to as a “Brilliant Master Electrician”. Larry was willing to give everyone a chance and was always eager to help them advance in their own careers. He was a man of integrity and principle.

Larry and Rosemary grew up in the same neighborhood where they briefly dated in high school. Fate brought them back together when they reunited 15 years later and married in 1985. He converted to Catholicism in 2007 and they were re-married in the Catholic Church that same year. Larry always called Rose “the love of his life!” They had nearly 38 wonderful years together.

Larry loved being a dad and grandfather. He was a very devoted and active father who was always curious about his children’s lives and loves, and ready to offer his advice. One of his greatest joys in life was watching his children and grandchildren grow up, hosting them and their many friends at the house, attending their various activities, spending time together outdoors – camping, fishing, and boating. During family get-togethers and holidays, he acquired well-earned nicknames “The Grillmaster” and “Captain Gravy.” “Chuckles” as he was affectionately called, had a quick wit and incredible sense of humor, peppered with frequent sarcasm that entertained anyone in his orbit. “Every day is Christmas!”

Larry loved basking (and napping) in the sun at the beach, and his favorite spots included Ocean City, Maryland (especially sunsets at fa*gers Island) and Oak Island, North Carolina. He was a gun enthusiast and enjoyed spending time at the shooting range, along with making modifications on guns and teaching others about firearms. A man of many interests and talents, at one point he owned a boat. Larry loved classic car shows, air shows, and earned his pilot’s license – his maiden voyage was a flight into Ocean City Airport to pick up a bucket of Fisher’s Popcorn. He tinkered with anything and everything that could possibly be fixed and if you ever had a problem or question, he was the guy to call. He loved working with his hands and always had at least five “active” projects. He recently built a workshop where he designed and machined new and previously obsolete metal parts. He was fascinated with technology and acquiring the newest on the market. Larry was proud to be an American and often engaged in political discussions. Larry’s smile was largest and laugh was most infectious when he was reclining in his living room chair, listening to music, surrounded by his family, many treasured friends, and lots of dogs.

The family will receive friends at Robert A. Pumphrey Funeral Home, 300 W. Montgomery Ave., Rockville, Maryland on Monday, December 19, 2022 from 4 to 7pm. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, 10103 Georgia Ave., Silver Spring, Maryland on Tuesday, December 20, 2022 at 11:30am, with viewing before from 10:30 to 11:30am. Interment will be private.

The family asks that in lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the dog rescue of your choosing (he particularly loved his Rottweiler Cassidy).
