'Oh, My Gosh! I'm Anxiety! Where Can I Put My Stuff?'

    Who Said It: Anxiety

When Anxiety (voiced by Maya Hawke) comes onto the scene, she introduces herself with a ton of baggage. Quite literally - she's carrying a bunch of bags she can barely hold onto. Obviously, it's a metaphor for the psychological burden of the emotion and how it can weigh you down and occupy more space than you have room for in a given day. Her hair is wild, and her face is a little manic - anyone who's ever had to deal with bouts of anxiety can attest to the fact that it's a pretty accurate physical manifestation of the emotion. She also pops out of nowhere, which tracks.

'Well, That's A Preview Of The Next Ten Years.'

Who Said It: Riley's Mom's Anger

All adults remember that brand of teenage state of angst that makes them overreact to the most ridiculous things. When Riley's mom is frustrated that her daughter hasn't packed yet, Riley, in all of her bedhead glory, screams, “I'm the wooooooorst!” It's … a lot.

Her mom is clearly taken aback. Inside her head, her own Anger emotion says, “Well, that's a preview of the next ten years.” While this might be a bit of an overstatement the sentiment remains fairly accurate. As brutal as it is for teens during that period, parents have to deal with the consequences of those raging hormones, too, and it's no walk in the park.

'We Gotta Get Our Mouthguard, People…'

    Who Said It: Fear

Anyone who's ever seen an NHL player smile without their fake teeth can attest to the fact that mouthguards are a vital accessory during hockey. With all of the checking and high sticking, things can get pretty violent - even on kids' teams. When Riley takes to the ice, Fear says, “We gotta get our mouthguard, people.”

Then, Riley puts in the wrong mouthguard, and it's Disgust's chance to shine, because - ew. Some of Fear's fears may be a bit unfounded, but he's right about the importance of wearing protective equipment when playing a sport like hockey. Just… hopefully not one covered in someone else's spit.

'That's Not Going To Haunt Us For The Rest Of Our Lives At All…'

    Who Said It: Anxiety

Maybe Joy isn't the best emotion to helm Riley's introductions. Anxiety tries to stop her from programming an overexcited reaction as Riley meets someone new, but ultimately fails because she's not domineering enough.

When the result causes Riley to do finger guns with a goofy, “Yeah, yeah,” all of the emotions are horrified. Anxiety sarcastically says, “That's not going to haunt us for the rest of our lives at all...” Meanwhile, Embarrassment slams his head on the programming board. Who said making friends was easy? For her part, Joy is completely oblivious to how utterly humiliating the entire exchange is.

'We Wanted To Make Such A Good First Impression!'

    Who Said It: Anxiety

After Anxiety introduces herself in her fittingly jarring way, she apologizes for stressing everyone out. But it's the word “we” that really causes pause when she says, “We wanted to make such a good impression!”

The OG emotions are about to meet a whole host of new friends (or foes), representing the new feelings that come with adolescence. It makes sense that Anxiety would beat herself up for coming in hot and failing to make a good impression - it's in her nature.

'Riley's Life Requires More Sophisticated Emotions Than All Of You.'

    Who Said It: Anxiety

There's no denying that approach high school - and that awkward period of puberty - results in a slew of new emotions and complicated situations to navigate. As a result, teenagers typically have a more intense range of emotions that develop through their teens. Anxiety explains this to the “old” emotions when she says, "Riley’s life requires more sophisticated emotions than all of you.”

While some people tend to look back at our school years with nostalgia glasses, that tumultuous period is also difficult for many. More “sophisticated” emotions certainly would help - though whether simple emotions like Joy or Anger are completely obsolete in adolescence remains dubious.
